Oh Baby, Baby
Mom found us on our Facebook page: One Of A Kind Christening Creations and contacted us to create this christening gown from her beautiful lace and beaded wedding gown. We used the appliqued waist decoration on
the bodice of the gown. We felt between the beautiful beading and lace on the bottom and the bodice decoration the bodice itself should be plain. We used the type of sleeve we call "bell".
The bonnet was made with an open back, great for growing baby to make sure it is sized correctly. It can be adjusted by opening up the ribbon in the back. Also give more ventilation for the summertime. The shoes were embroidered with the date of the baby's Christening.

Shoes!
Anyone who knows me knows I love SHOES! That's my thing. So, small wonder I decided to create & hand make shoes to match our gowns or for anyone else who wants cute, cute shoes!!! The date of the christening can be embroidered on the bottom of the shoe, something I'll be doing for our next customer.

Megan's Dress

Our newest creation was picked up today by mom & dad. Mom's gown came to us with quite a bit of stains on the bottom from dragging around on the ground. Also, the dress was stepped on and the hem came out. We were able to work our magic by finding the least stained areas to cut out baby's dress. Sometimes the length of the dress changes depending on what our customer wants or how badly stained the dress is but we were able to do the traditional long dress. We used the smaller beading and hand stitched it on the edge of the sleeves and used one band of them on the bonnet. We took just a small amount of the beaded trim work to put on the bodice and place a small decorative touch on the bonnet just to pull it all together.Friday, March 29, 2013
What to Expect
You've decided to convert your wedding gown to a christening gown or romper for your precious baby, so what can you expect? Having a garment custom made means you should expect a beautiful, hand crafted item that will be made using your wedding gown with any lace/decorations/beading/buttons that would look appropriate for a baby. Sometimes the beading is so heavy that we only use part of the design. We design specifically for you taking into consideration any specific requests. Often the design evolves as we sew. Often customers send us pictures of outfits they have seen and like and that helps us a great deal. Other times we're handed a gown and just told to "do our thing", which we also enjoy. Okay, so there's nothing about this we don't enjoy!
We look over your wedding gown and inspect it for stains. We usually recommend that if you have not had your gown cleaned to wait until after we complete the garment because we need to handle the fabric. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee that the stains will come out so we try as hard as we can to only use clean fabric, but sometimes that's not possible. All fabric not used is returned to our customer.
Most people don't realize how much fabric is needed to create the gown or romper. Sometimes if there is enough fabric, we have been requested to make both a boys and girl's outfit and if the wedding gown has a long train, this can usually be done. Sometimes we are asked to make a gown suitable for a boy or girl and then create a girl's bonnet and a boy's hat.
We generally like to have 3 weeks start to finish. There is quite a bit of hand sewing involved. The bodice of the gown/romper is fully lined. What you cannot expect is cookie cutter, factory looking sewing. We are our own worst critics and do not let anything out of our hands until we are satisfied.
We can also create matching jackets, coats, slips, vests, etc.
We have also created First Communion dresses from mom's gown. Those are a bit trickier and sometimes cannot be entirely made from that fabric. We can also create veils for the girls from their mom's veil. Another way of handing down precious memories.
The beauty of a custom made garment is you CAN have it your way!

Newest Wedding Gown Conversion
Our newest creation was designed and made for baby Annabelle and her mom Carly. Carly requested that we try to use only the long train on the back of the dress and leave the main dress intact. We're happy to report we were able to accomodate her. She also wanted the sheer, appliqued overlay used on the christening gown bottom and we were able to remove more appliques to tie it all together. Several appliques were hand sewn onto the bonnet and the bodice of the gown. Many times we have to work around dirty and stained areas of the gown and in this case we had to move up the train to get good fabric but this meant the long swoop of the train overlay would not lay straight on the skirt. We were able to work around this by pulling up the top of the overlay skirt and create an upsweep in the back, sort of a "princess" look.

I've Moved!
Last week I moved into my new home so we now have 2 locations to service our NJ customers, Ocean and Middlesex Counties. Angie and I are still figuring out our working arrangement but are already hard at work on our newest christening gown creation for a customer in Conn. Being busy with the move, I did not have time to take a picture of the "before" gown, this time grandma is having the gown done for her upcoming grandchild. Meanwhile, here's some pictures or our "kids" in their gowns. So precious! Thanks Moms for sending them.

Two Fer
Our latest customer wanted two Christening outfits created from her wedding gown, one for her godson and one for her daughter. Her dress was probably a size 2, simple but very elegant ivory silk dupioni. We were able to match the fabric for her godson's outfit and used part of hers for the bodice, including the satin. She wanted a dress but a little more masculine. For her daughter, we made her daughter's christening dress entirely out of her wedding gown, added gathered ecru lace to the lining, sleeves, bodice and bonnet to make it more feminine. The colors in the photographs show different but it's still the same gown.

A Gown for Molly
Molly's gown is on it's way to Texas! We communicated with mom through emails and we also "skyped", which was a great way to "show and tell". Mom wanted a dress that was "flowy". Since her gown was soft satin and organza, we were able to do that. The satin was used across the bottom of the bodice for a little definition. The appliques had to be removed from the higher portion of the gown and moved down to the bottom of the skirt, which were then applied by hand. Appliques were also applied to the bonnet and the bodice to complete the look. God Bless Molly on her Christening Day!

Lot's O' Gowns!
We've been so gratefully busy the last few weeks. We have our very first 1st Communion Dress created from mom's wedding gown, our first customer from Texas along with 3 other Christening Gowns, all very different from each other and each so much fun to create so look for pictures soon!!! We always try to accomodate our customer's wishes while we deconstruct to construct the perfect Christening gown. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's very difficult but we love a challenge!
